Botanical Garden

From a lawn to biodiversity

Welcome to our botanical garden. The place where you can see, feel, smell and (sometimes) taste medicinal plants and trees in real life. The garden is an important part of our curriculum where students learn to master the profession of herbalist and herbalist. Even if you are not a student of our course, you can take a tour by appointment.

In addition to the large amount of plants, more and more different animals and insects visit our garden.

Courses and workshops

Construction of the garden: 2018

At the beginning of 2018, the garden was a large lawn with only a row of spruces at the end of the plot and a small landscaped vegetable garden that had been created by the previous residents.

After a lot of teasing, shoveling, digging, painting posts and planks, herbs, planting trees, the garden started to take shape.

At the moment the foundation is there, but there is still a lot of work to be done in terms of the details. Volunteers are always welcome to contribute.

Poison and trip garden

In this garden you can find plants that are poisonous and were used in medicine in ancient times, such as belladonna, datura, henbane and the mandrake. There are also plants that influence how we perceive the world. In addition, in this garden you can find a number of plants with great historical and mythological value. These plants are often used by natural religions during ritual use or have stories from ancient times (and are not always poisonous).

Warning:
Do not eat anything from this garden or touch the plants.
A single berry can sometimes be fatal or cause serious skin irritation/inflammation if touched.

Children and animals are not allowed to enter this garden without adult supervision.
Entering this garden is at your own risk.

Fragrance and color garden

In this garden you can find plants with a strong smell and taste. There are also plants in this garden that give a strange feeling, such as cuddly bear soft or very sticky. You can also find plants here with which you can dye textiles.

Special - ordinary garden

In this garden you can find plants that are rare (special) in the Netherlands or exotic. In addition, there are plants that are common (ordinary) in the Netherlands. The common interest is that they are both of great value in medicine.

So just special :)

Allotment

Our vegetable garden contains various vegetables that we grow throughout the season. We process everything that we cannot eat immediately by preserving and freezing.

Home garden

The themed gardens are surrounded by various borders and wild areas. Plants that want to grow there are allowed to grow here with the aim of creating the most diverse flora and fauna possible. We also have a large insect hotel and several hedgerows where small animals can hide. There are also trees scattered throughout the garden that have a culinary or medical value, from the hazelnut to the horse chestnut and from the birch to the walnut.

There is play equipment for the children in the middle of the native garden.

Rose garden

In the rose garden you can find various old botanical roses, including the apothecary rose, the centifolia rose and the damascene rose. These have been cultivated and used in the perfume industry and pharmacy since 1600. There are also other beautiful and fragrant roses scattered throughout the rest of the garden. Enjoy the smell and the beauty, but don't let these beauties sting you.

Orchard

Our beautiful orchard contains various fruit trees and fruit bushes. Do you see ripe fruit hanging? Feel free to snack on some of these delicious fruits.

There are also trees with medicinal properties and nut-bearing trees for culinary use scattered throughout the site

Spring garden

Be surprised by all the beautiful colors and scents in our spring garden in the spring.

Bugs... bugs everywhere

Since we started building the garden, we see more and more animals and insects coming into our garden. Some are just passers-by, others have moved in permanently.
